The Salaamedia Observatory Monitor

Tracking the Truth in Sudan

About the Observatory

In the heart of the devastating conflict in Sudan, information is a lifelineβ€”and a weapon. The Salaamedia Observatory was established as a vital monitoring system to rigorously document and evaluate violations resulting from the ongoing war. We are not just collecting data; we are building an evidence-based case for accountability.

Our goal is to provide accurate statistics and comprehensive reports that empower those fighting for justice. This data strengthens the work of advocacy groups, investigative journalists, and human rights researchers, helping to expose the painful truths the people of Sudan are experiencing.

What We Document

Since April 15, 2023 our teams have focused on documenting and tracking the most critical violations across 8 key pillars:

Airstrikes

Documenting and tracking airstrikes on civilian areas.

Drone Strikes

Monitoring drone strikes targeting populated areas.

Missing

Documenting unaccounted for civilians and their whereabouts.

Aid Workers

Documenting attacks on aid workers who are protected under international law.

Aid Convoys

Monitoring attacks targeting relief convoys, ensuring adherence to international humanitarian law.

Detention

Documenting cases of unlawful arrest and detention.

Disappearance

Tracking enforced disappearances and missing persons.

Judicial

Monitoring and documenting trials conducted during the conflict (Strange Faces Law).

Our Methodology: How We Ensure Accuracy

Credibility is the foundation of our work. To ensure the highest level of accuracy and impartiality, the Observatory uses a multi-layered data collection and verification process:

Data Sources

We draw information from a wide and diverse network to ensure triangulation and context:

πŸ“° Open Sources

All publicly available information online.

πŸ‘₯ Local Voices

Testimonies from affected victims or domain experts, often requiring contact with multiple sources for verification. We rely heavily on local groups like Resistance Committees, Emergency Rooms, and Kitchens pages.

🀝 Partner Reports

Verified reports from our extensive network, including human rights organizations, media partners, and the "Darfur Speaks to the World" project.

πŸ”¬ Field Research

When necessary, we utilize on-the-ground researchers through our project partners.

Verification and Production

1
πŸ”

Investigation

Our editorial team subjects all collected information to rigorous investigation to verify sources, cross-reference widely shared news, and extract credible statistics.

2
πŸ“Š

Analysis

We use descriptive and historical analysis to tell the full story, utilizing time series analysis to narrate how the conflict has evolved from its start.

3
πŸ“ˆ

Visualization

We transform complex data and statistics into accessible visual formats, including infographics and interactive maps, for maximum impact.

4
πŸ“’

Dissemination

Reports are distributed across all major media channels (Facebook, X, website, etc.) and directly to a focused list of policymakers, decision-makers, and organizations globally to drive action.

Our production is guided by the core values of credibility, accuracy, impartiality, and professionalism, alongside an unwavering commitment to fundamental human rights principles.

Partners and Collaborators

The scope of this work is only possible through collaboration with a vast network of dedicated institutions.
